Question of the Week (3/2/12)

Find an advertisement that you really DISLIKE (It could be either a print ad or a TV ad). Describe the ad AND put a link to the ad or the image itself on the blog. What is it about the ad that makes you dislike it? How would you change it to make it into something that you would agree with/buy? Post by 3 p.m. on Tuesday and don't forget to respond to a classmates' response.

In this ad a room is filled with gross rotting food and they spray the room with fabreeze. They later lead a person in and see what they say about it. After that they take they're blind folds off and realize how gross the room is. I really don't like it because of the setting. It makes it look very unpleasant and i just don't want to watch it. I would make it a more pleasant setting because it would make it more warm and fuzzy which i think is usually more effective.

    1. You spelled febreze wrong.

The first time I saw this commercial I was really confused and disgusted too but the ad does make a valid point. The point of the ad is to prove that febreze can cover up dirty objects/areas. I've bought febreze before; It works.

    2. I understand what you are getting at, but I think the point of the ad was to show that even in a room that gross, febreze will make it smell nice

    3. I think the fact that they don't use "warm and fuzzy" is what makes the ad stand out more against the other commercials. It is kind of gross to look at, but it makes a statement.

    4. Please use another word besides fuzzy to desribe how you would make the setting, because fuzzy things make me uncomfortable. But you're cute, and I agree with your opinion on the febreeze ad.

Its about H&R Block taking a Second Look art people taxes. Yes of course you film the people who get a couple thousand dollars back. But what about the people who don't get any money or upon a second look they find that you actually owe money. Its like winning the lottery except it could go both ways. They also make it seem like everyone who goes to H&R will get money back. Its also making the government out to be some big bad institution. Now, im not one to side with the government but they do need taxes to build roads and pay for schools. It makes them seem like they are unfairly taking their money, when for the most part they aren't.

It's about Luvs diapers and great they work. The commercial is a contest of all these babies and how big they can get their diapers without spilling. For one, I am not a big fan of the animation Also, I don't want to think of babies leaking in their diapers. The commercial wasn't cute at all and it wasn't pleasing to watch because of just the actions that were being portrayed in the commercial by the babies. The message made sense but it wasn't pretty. I would rather see cute babies in their diapers or something related to it

    1. First time I saw this commercial I thought it was funny but I don't think the parents would not enjoy watching this commercial.

    2. I only watched about half of this because I thought it was so annoying and weird. I can't stand it. It is gross and animated, not a fan.

    3. Wow you are right that is disgusting and slightly disturbing. It's hard to even say what audience that type of commercial would be appealing to since it would seem to offend everyone except for maybe the babies themselves who desire leak proof diapers.

This ad is about a husband telling a wife that he signed up the whole family for unlimited minutes with AT&T. Wife wants to know where he's going to get the money for it. She goes on to say that "she should have married Tom Clark. Husband then tells her that those minutes are free. I find this ad terrible. I just don't get how this commercial is supposed to make people want to sign up for AT&T. Very sad to see a wife browbeats a husband trying to do good for a family. This commercial is very unpleasant to watch.

    1. I did not like this commercial either, it does not show the trust or respect that comes from a couple in marriage. In a way it shows that there has to be a smart, dominant partner in a marriage and that they can't be equal.

This commercial is selling a product that kills lice, it does so by using an elephant to show how efficient most home remedy's would be and that all of them are just as stupid. I dislike this greatly, if they want to challenge home grow remedy's than at least present some actual opposition. Its easy for your product to look good when compared to an elephant.

    1. I agree, that comparison is ridiculous. It would've been more suitable to compare it to other brands of its sort.

this commercial is trying to sell 1-800 contacts by a couple acting as if it was a soap-opera. The husband doesn't believe that 1-800 contacts has his special brand for his "special eyes". I find this commercial annoying because it is acting as if it is so dramatic and hard to find your special brand of contacts. Its like they are over exaggerating how much they can really help you.

This ad for cement is terrible, I suppose they are trying to prove their pont but the way they go about doing this is not good. I don't even think I have to say why I think this ad is bad. It is very clear they should rethink what they say. They don't need to remind people about how bad 9/11 was, it is not going to make people want to buy their product.

    1. Wow, this ad is really mean. It basically implies that if their cement was used instead of what it was before, then 9/11 wouldn't have happened. If their cement was used and was as powerful as they described it to be, then the people who were still on the floors of impact would've still been hurt/destroyed. Even if the cement was even more uber powerful and the plane just "bounced" off the building; (1) the passengers of the airplanes would've still been hopeless to save, and (2) the surrounding building would've been incredibly damaged unless they were built with this cement... To my opinion, using a picture of the Two Towers was totally inappropriate for this ad--as well as many other types.

  10. I'm sorry that I couldn't find a link for this, I tried to look for it but did not succeed in finding it... But my ad is one promoting Apple iPhone's Siri function. In the ad, a woman calls her husband on her phone and asks him if he's done several chores. He has not done them, but he tells her that he has and uses Siri to help him get the things done. I don't like this ad because it potentially promotes lying, which is unacceptable (especially towards loved one). The commercial would have been more appropriate had the husband said that he hadn't done the chores yet, waits for the wife to complain, and then explains that it's okay due to the fact that Siri can help him get these chores done faster.

  11. I don't like the correlation between people feeling they are talking to god and smoking weed to talk to him as well. The add itself is somewhat humorous but other than that I think it endorsees the wrong message about drugs and their acceptable use. With so many youths already smoking marijuana ads like this do nothing but persuade those who are not already or convince those who already to continue. The add is a picture of two joints put together in a cross with a caption of "Does it matter how you achieve your spiritual high? Join the discussion". The idea of all roads to spiritual high is incorrect and I think in this case inappropriate.

This ad is not good because it is very annoying. Also it doesn't relate to what they are trying to sell the viewer. There is no point to this ad. A pig on a zip line who is yelling an obnoxious noise is not an ad.

  13. I think these ads are the worst. They just say a bunch of stuff that I do not understand, and they try to sound like they know what they are talking about. And every time I see this I think lies! I use their service and it never works! And the girl in it is a pain and bugs me to no end

I don't like this because they say "go meat" so many times and it's not even sound right. The woman is just having a salad with same hams. The whole office is sing go meat and at the end a fat guy jumps on her desk. It is stupid and very annoying.

    1. I actually find this ad humorous. Certainly, it doesn't really advertise accordingly, but it is funny and very catchy! If I see Hillshire in the markets, I can automatically remember the tune and the words of their catchy song. Its certainly a pointless way to advertise, but funny and catchy.

  16. I find this commercial really creepy. There is a talking puppet teddy bear that is in the laundry. If the bear had a different voice, it would be a bit better. This ad would work if they had an animated bear instead of the stuffed animal, because when they use the puppet it seems too "real".

  17. The commercial that really drives me absolutely insane, is the commercial called "Madeline Carroll - Mr. Clean Commercial". There are a million commercials about Mr. Clean. Basically what this commercial is saying, is that the Mr. Cleans magic eraser has the fresh scent of febreze and the magic eraser gets in and helps tackle what's caped on and down right scummy.

I love the smell of old spice, but does this really get men to buy it? Women being portrayed in some sexual way? I mean, it is humorous because all she's doing is liking an ice cream cone and men will probably go buy it, but I think there are other ways that companies can advertise to men. BUT, maybe not! Do all guys get attracted to a product based on the sexy women portrayals in them? I guess it would vary from man to man.

  19. The ad is for Target and it uses the Beatles song Hello Goodbye. In the ad they changed the song so it sounds kind of annoying. Also there are lips that sing and they are creepy. It advertised a bunch of products that they sell. I would change it so that it uses the version of the song that hasn't been changed and also they should change the lips.

  20. This is an advertisement for Skittles, and it is being used to show how the skittle tree's mother uses him for his candy product. She performs acts such as tickling and bribing, to make her son laugh, which causes the skittles beared from his tree to fall into her bucket. Also, she suggests that college is less important than the harvest, and having a giant tree branch coming out of her son's body. I dislike the fact that the silly boy's mother decieves him, and if i changed this add i would send him to college after the harvest.
