  2. I read an article from the New York Times called "Education Gap Grows Between Rich and Poor, Studies Say" by Sabrina Tavernise (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/10/education/education-gap-grows-between-rich-and-poor-studies-show.html?ref=us)

This article discussed how at one point in history, education equalized the community and now, while researching the achievement gap between black and white students, researchers discovered a gap between low-income students and affluent ones, has increased in size. this is also true for students that are in college and may determine why some people drop out and some don't.

"We have moved from a society in the 1950s and 1960s, in which race was more consequential than family income, to one today in which family income appears more determinative of educational success than race." -Sean F. Reardon, Stanford University sociologist

    Who?
Students around the world, from high school to college
    What?
    Financial wedge between students
    Where?
    Washington
    When?
Published February 9, 2012, studies conducted until 2007/2008
    Why?
Discovered this financial difference in academics while researching academic achievements versus black and white people.

    1. This is really interesting, do we know how it will affect the child or have they just decided that the consequences will not be lethal for the infant?
This could be a revolutionary discovery in the medical field and both increase the survival rate for pregnant mothers as well as lower the infant mortality rate.

    3. I feel like this article is very informative and relieving to pregnant women around the entire world with cancer, because before their choice was between living a longer life vs. having their baby, and that had to be an extremely painful decision to make. Thankfully to this article, that decision won't have to be nearly as difficult to make, and the women in that situation (who read this) are now informed! Nice pick!

    2. This is a very big deal. Great eye-catching topic, especially because it's such an overlooked brand name. It'd be like Kleenex dropping off the face of the earth; you don't really think about it all the time, but it was important for it to exist.

    2. I don't think that the entertainment system would be a success if they tried to sell it. Google will definitely keep trying to expand, but I think that even if the company stayed they way they are now, they would be fine.

  18. The news article that I read from the New York Times is called "Mindful Eating as Food for Thought" by Jeff Gordinier.

Gordinier begins by introducing the practice of "mindful eating" and it's relation to Buddhism. Then he states that "mindful eating" could be the long-lost cure for people with obesity all across the United States of America, and it is not a diet. "Mindful Eating" is defined as an anti-diet about experiencing food more intensely--"gazing at, musing on, holding and patiently masticating" for about 10-20 minutes. Then Gordinier wrote about the regular/daily meals and meal process at the Blue Cliff Monastery, a Buddhist school that follows the practice of "mindful eating". After, he concludes the article with things to consider when we eat.

Who: The brothers and sisters (monks) of the Blue Cliff Monastery, through a videotaped lecture by Thich Nhat Hanh (founder of BCM and others).

What: Visitors of the BCM watched a videotaped lecture by Thich Nhat Hanh, strolled methodically around the grounds (experienced a walking meditation), then had lunch. Filled their plates with food, like we do today, only in silence; and sat down together during a eyes-closed Buddhist preyer for gratitude and moderation. They enjoyed a free "'day of mindfulness'".

Where: At the Blue Cliff Monastery, in Pine Bush, NY.

When: For a day in January of 2012, for a free "'day of mindfulness'" that occurs twice a week. (BCM was opened in 2007)

Why: It was written as a way to fight bingeing (over-eating), and promote this particular process ("mindful eating") as a way of prevention and as anti-diet. It was also written to show hold this process is successful--another way of advertising it.
